ANOTHER FIRST FOR CARRIACOU:
“FIRST CESAREAN DELIVERY AT CHS”
On Friday, September 15th, 2006 Carriacou Health Services (CHS) saw another first for Carriacou with the delivery by cesarean section of a healthy baby boy, 9lbs 15oz. Mother and baby did well and stayed at the center postoperatively for several days after delivery. The anesthesiologist, Dr. Odili and Scrub Nurse, Ms. Baptiste hailed from Grenada with the rest of the delivery team, Nurse Coy and Sister Bullen based in Carriacou. Dr. McIntosh performed the delivery and stated that everything went smoothly once it was determined that the patient who came to deliver at the center would not progress to a vaginal delivery. It would have then been the usual steps of chartering the Osprey or airline to travel to Grenada for delivery at the General Hospital but due to the presence of an operating team and the services available at CHS, that was not the case. The patient underwent the necessary cesarean section on site without complications.
On September 1st and 2nd, the Mammogram technician visited CHS again, performing mammograms on site. The Ultrasound technician performed 33 ultrasounds using the Dionics Ultrasound Machine, which is able to do dopplers, carotids, small parts, abdominal, renal and ob/gyn sonography. Patients came in, had mammograms performed and received preliminary results of their mammograms before leaving the center with the final report available three days later. In addition, patients received information on doing breast self-exams and the importance of having a mammogram to screen for breast cancer. If they needed a breast sonogram based on the results of the mammogram, they were able to have it done the same day. The next visit is scheduled for October 14, 2006. September 15th, 2006, Dr. Lazar again visited to provide cardiologic evaluations and echocardiograms.
