HAPPENINGS AT CARRIACOU HEALTH SERVICES

Carriacou Health Services is very pleased to announce that we are now offering Thin Prep Liquid-Based Pap smears with HPV typing and on-site coagulation testing. Any individual who is currently taking Coumadin or other blood-thinning medication requires periodic coagulation testing of the blood. This may include individuals who have been treated for blood clots in the legs, strokes, heart problems such as irregular heartbeat or palpitations, heart valve problems or history of heart valve replacement, or history of blood filter placement.  Because this blood test (called the INRatio) measures how rapidly or slowly the patient’s blood clots, it helps to ensure that each patient is receiving the proper dose of medication. If the blood clots too rapidly, perhaps the Coumadin dose must be increased. If the blood clots too slowly or not at all, this may indicate that the Coumadin dose must be decreased. If the blood clots too rapidly, the patient may be at risk for stroke or heart attack. If the blood clots too slowly, the individual may be at risk of hemorrhage.

Carriacou Health Services has recognized a need in the community for such testing to be performed locally --- previously, the closest lab offering this testing was located in Trinidad. Through the generosity of many private donors, CHS now has the necessary machine, and can offer coagulation testing to individuals here on Carriacou and in the entire eastern Caribbean at cost. To cover the expense of testing strips, patients will be charged $25 EC for each test; however, in keeping with our mission to provide care regardless of ability to pay, tests will be offered to those suffering extreme financial hardship on a sliding scale basis.

In addition, March 5th -9th, we will have a visiting Surgical Team performing surgery including laparoscopic surgery at CHS. This was made possible through the generous support of the Ashby Foundation, under the leadership of Mr. Cristofer Ashby. The Ashby Foundation is underwriting the surgery for several patients with financial hardships and who are in need of surgery. The surgical team consists of Plastic and General Surgeon, Dr. Mia Talmor Anesthesiologist, Dr. Leroy Sutherland, Nurse Anesthesist, Ms. Iris Tuitt, OR Tech, Mr. Waine Campbell, RN, Ms. Elizabeth Cross and our local Nurses and Physicians. Surgeries will be performed all week. If you are in need of surgery or would like to have a consultation to discuss surgery during that week, please call to schedule an appointment.

We are also continuing with our on-going medical services which include adult, pediatric and ob/gyn services, prenatal care and delivery, laboratory services, radiology services and chiropractic services. Please also visit our Health and Fitness Center and view our Multi-Function Room on the second floor which is available for rental.

The Mission of CHS is to provide quality, compassionate healthcare services to the people of Grenada, Carriacou, Petite Martinique, the Grenadines and Worldwide that embrace our values of quality, human dignity and community.
